Today I planned to run an off-road 5K sponsored by Action Asia and put on in the massive Tai Lam Country Park up in the New Territories, about an hour or so north of the main island.
Unfortunately, the race was a bit disorganized, to say the least. Several others and I ended up going the wrong way because the trail wasn’t very clearly marked, and in our attempt to find the right, we actually ended up getting more lost.
A middle-aged Hong Kong man, a South African mother and I banned together and ran for about 7 miles before giving up and deciding we had better walk since we weren’t sure how long we were going to have to keep going to get out of the hills and back to the starting camp.
Eventually, we actually stumbled upon the trail for the 21K (because it was a 5K, 11K and 21K race), and were told that there were only 8K to go down the hills through the woods (the off-road course), so we figured our best bet was to just join the group and head down.
Somehow I made it despite not being trained for a 21K—especially not an off-road one. At least I’m getting back in shape, the weather was nice, and the views were killer!
